Similar to other survival games, your equipment will wear out the more you use it, and it'll eventually break.
In order to repair, you're going first to need to research and build a Repair Station, which should be unlocked when you're able to access the second trial.
Once you've completed this step, you'll only be able to repair items that you've already researched. so keep this in mind!
