Star Wars Jedi Survivor: Release Date News, Leaks, Story and Character Predictions

Is there going to be a Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order 2 game? Thankfully we have our answer, and it’s called ‘Star Wars Jedi: Survivor’.

Earlier this year Electronic Arts officially announced they had agreed to an extension of its partnership with Lucasfilm Games, including a sequel to Respawn’s celebrated action-adventure. Couple this with Disney cementing the game’s characters as key parts of Star Wars lore, and ramping up interest in the game with unannounced Lego sets and selling replica Cal Kestis lightsabers in theme parks, and it’s clear Disney is quite smitten with Respawn’s efforts.

The obvious next question then becomes, does Star Wars Jedi: Survivor have a release date yet? Well read on, everything you need to know about Respawn’s sequel can be found just below.

August 3 - Star Wars Jedi: Survivor may release later than we first thought

Don’t forget that Disney will be hosting a games showcase event this week, which is dedicated to titles from across its different brands.

We’re not 100% sure if this would include the team at Respawn, but given they’re working on arguably the biggest Star Wars game around, who knows.

The Disney & Marvel Games Showcase will be streamed live on Friday 9 September 2022, starting at 9pm BST. Here are some time zones for different locations:

  • US West Coast: 1pm PDT
  • US East Coast: 4pm EDT
  • UK: 9pm BST
  • Central Europe: 10pm CEST
  • Japan: 5am JST (10 September)
  • Australia: 6am JST (10 September)
August 3 - Star Wars Jedi: Survivor may release later than we first thought

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor could launch a little later than many fans first believed.

On August 2, EA held its first quarter financial briefing and CEO Andrew Wilson was on hand to answer questions from investors and analysts. Wilson was asked whether the company’s unannounced Q4 title might be Jedi Survivor, but this was quickly shot down.

Referring to the unannounced game on EA’s slate launching between January and March 2023, analyst Doug Creutz of Cowen and Company asked Wilson:

“I’m just wondering if – since you’ve announced Star Wars [Jedi: Survivor], do we assume that, therefore, that this isn’t the Star Wars game or should we not assume anything?”

In response, Wilson poured cold water on the suggestion, replying: “I think the advice would be to not assume anything”.

As pointed out by GamesRadar, EA’s fiscal year concludes at the end of March 2023, and if the unannounced game on their slate was Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, it would in theory have to launch between January and March to fall into that final quarter.

So we guess it’s going to be coming to our consoles much later.

Star Wars Jedi Survivor Release Date Predictions

Star Wars Jedi Survivor has a confirmed release date of 2023 on PS5, Xbox Series S|X and PC. The game will not release on PS4 or Xbox One consoles. In addition for the time being there isn’t a specific release date, only this window of when we can expect it to launch.

That being said, we believe the game could arrive at some stage in between January 2023 and March 2023. This is based on some careful deductive work from EA’s last investor presentation, as they announced that they had a “major IP” set to release at some stage in this time period.

Why is Star Wars Jedi Survivor not coming to Ps4 and Xbox One?

According to Jeff Grubb (in quotes transcribed by VGC) the decision to focus solely on new-gen systems “has some upsides” because “they don’t have to worry about trying to straddle these generation lines”.

“It makes it easier to just disassociate yourself with those millions of PS4s and Xbox Ones out in the world when you are in 2023 and you’re going to have several months of making it very easy to get an Xbox Series X, probably a few months before now and then when it’s actually okay to get a PS5,” Grubb suggested said.

This seems to have been more or less confirmed by Game Director Stig Asmussen, who in talking to StarWars.com, was keen to stress the power of current-gen consoles over older hardware. You can find Asmussen’s full quote, just below:

“So I think the biggest thing is ray tracing, or lighting. That’s allowing us to do real-time lighting, all the time, at a fidelity that’s well beyond anything that we’ve ever produced before. Since it’s real-time, we get to see the changes as we tweak the lights — immediately, essentially. That means that we have more time to polish, that means that we can iterate more, and we can get better results that feel more filmic. Beyond that, we have these blazing fast drives on these consoles that are allowing us to load tons of content really quickly. I’ve always worked on streaming games — games that don’t have load screens. The fact that these consoles have such fast storage has made it even easier. Those are probably the two biggest benefits. PlayStation 5 has some really interesting haptics on their controller that we’re digging into, and it’s just an easier process in general.”

Star Wars Jedi Survivor Trailer

For now, there’s only one cinematic trailer or gameplay of Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order 2, but we don’t think we’ll have to wait long before we get a glimpse of the new game.

Many believe that we could get our first trailer to the game during the Star Wars Celebration event, which is taking place from May 26 – May 29, 2022. Given that we’ve heard rumours of some sort of crossover with the upcoming Disney Plus show Obi-Wan Kinobi – which begins May 27 – this feels like the perfect time to drop an announcement trailer for the Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order sequel

Star Wars Jedi Survivor Gameplay

So far we’ve only seen a cinematic trailer and it’s hard to assess how the gameplay might change from the first game. The only official thing that we know, or at least, that we think could change, comes from the StarWars.com interview with Game Director Stig Asmussen.

Asmussen mentioned that there was a lot of things left from the first game on the editing room floor, which Respawn wanted to put ‘into the sequel’. One of the things mentioned includes “more stances” so it seems a sage bet that Cal’s fighting repertoire will be going up a notch in the sequel.

Unofficially, it’s also believed that Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order could see a slight change to the look of Purge Troopers, who were first introduced in the first game.

According to a report from MakingStarWars, Purge Troopers will be making their first live-action appearance in the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi series, but they’ve undergone a bit of a redesign, namely, sharing a closer resemblance to the Shore Troopers first seen in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

“Don’t worry, it is the same great Purge Trooper taste but with a new can,” the report explains. “The helmet of the Purge Trooper has been reworked and revised a bit. The helmet has been changed and it is closer to a Shore Trooper now. I am not saying they wear black Shore Trooper helmets, it is just the closest comparison I can make from memory. Think of it as a “spirit of” comparison. The helmet is pretty neat and I doubt it will disappoint most Purge Trooper enthusiasts.”

Star Wars Jedi Survivor Storyline

Beyond making guesses based on the trailer footage, details about the storyline are thin on the ground. It’s obviously got a darker tone, and director Asmussen has stated that it’s ‘all about survival’, hence the title of the game.

“They are in dark times, and Cal and the crew are doing whatever it takes to stay alive.” he explained to StarWars.com “That might mean that they are making connections with people that, in other times, might be considered unsavory. Some of that is portrayed in the trailer.”

Beyond this, we do know that the game is set five years after the events of Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order. This means that the new game actually runs parallel to the events currently unfolding in the Disney+ TV series Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Prior to being revealed it has been strongly suggested that there could be some sort of crossover with the Disney+ show, especially since both heavily feature The Inquisitors as central villains.

Ewan McGregor also appeared to have given some hints that the show could tie into the videogame. Speaking on the Jimmy Kimmel Show (Via IGN) McGregor praised director Deborah Chow for her Star Wars knowledge. Intriguingly though, he mentioned “all of the storylines have to … match up” and you “can’t have some fact in a video game that doesn’t match up to the movie.”

The only other rumour we’ve heard involves Ahsoka Tano playing some sort of part in the game. When you consider there’s an upcoming Ahsoka live-action television limited series in the works, it could make complete sense. Especially given that Ahsoka was the apprentice of Anakin Skywalker, who appeared in the Jedi Fallen Order game in his Darth Vader getup.
