CALL OF DUTY DITCH ANNUAL RELEASES, ACTIVISION CONFIRMS
April 8, 2022
Activision has confirmed that Call of Duty is no longer an annual release and suggests that the rumours we might see Call of Duty skip launching a brand new game in 2023 could be true.
The news seems to have been announced in the midst of Activision Blizzard confirming that its US-based QA testers would become full-time employees.
For the past decade development teams at Infinity Ward, Treyarch, and Sledgehammer Games have all worked together to ensure a three-year development cycle. By that, each developer has ostensively taken turns to churn out a new game every three years, with support studios like Beenox, Raven Software, and Toys For Bob assisting with the process.
But the launch of Warzone seems to have thrown a spanner into the works, as developers struggle to maintain both the annual release schedule and the hot new Battle Royal.
This statement would seem to suggest that Call of Duty will look to move away from its annual release and allow more support to Warzone, which supports this ‘always on’ model.
Considering Call of Duty: Warzone is supposedly raking in over $5.2 million per day, at least according to 2021 study by NetBet, it seems like Activision will still be making plenty of money without the annual release.
It’s also been rumoured that Activision wants to remaster some of its older Call of Duty games to help fill the void as the company looks to move away from an annual release cycle.
Writing on Twitter leaker RalphsValve told fans: “Activision are reportedly considering releasing Remastered Call of Duty titles repurposed for newer consoles to fill out the empty space between Premium Call of Duty titles. World at War, Call of Duty 1 & 2 – backwards compatibility for Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare Remastered are currently what’s in conversation.”
In relation to other titles from CoD’s history, RalphsValve explained that “Everything else was described by an associate as ‘complicated'”.
